Thoughts on Session 4

The final module was quite interesting as it forced us to redesign our own classrooms to support PYP.

As for me as PYP educator, I have selected the following capability:

I will integrate transdisciplinary and disciplinary concepts, knowledge, and skills in a way that supports a coherent learning experience for students

I believe I can integrate the transdisciplinary concepts when designing the planner. But the skills, in the classroom design. Sucess would like in the form of a cohesive planner, meaning we have worked together collaboratively. Also, in the students’ attitudes towards the Units of Inquiry.

The evidence at the moment would be my ability to replicate this knowledge onto my teachers. As I am not a PYP educator yet. As a PYP educator, the evidence would be reflected onto my kids and their ability to voice, choose, and own their actions, decisions, and ideas inside my classroom.

An interesting journey for sure.

Thoughts on Session 3

So for this session we checked about Agency (Yay!) and the Role of the Planner.

PYP Principles:

By now, the principles and practices of PYP are coming along better. Definitely to read the role of the teacher and students in the Inquiry Process was eye-opening for the little years.

Let’s practice!

Definitely a good way to put it in practice is asking the kids to propose ideas and voice their opinions about the learning outcomes.

Agency:

I can finally see how Agency comes into play. Supported by teachers and the planning.

Inquiry as Pedagogical Approach:

As it is the starting point, Inquiry is used to entice students into exploring, questioning, and debating a particular topic. Then being open-minded to share and respect others’ opinions.

Promoting Agency:

Allowing kids the power of voice and letting them choose and be responsible of their learning outcomes. Keeping a log journal to gather learning evidence and setting regular check-ins with kids promotes Agency.

Students Actions:

As of now, I am not yet working with little kids. But with my big ones, we work towards learning goals and they choose how to tackle a particular topic and then provide evidence of learning.

Collaborative Planning:

This topic has been the most interesting to me. As having teams that participate in the Central Idea and the subjects that are not part of it but also work on the process. Quite wonderful. The importance of building a community that seeks to learn and unlearn.

Thoughts on Session 2

So, for this session the aim was to explore Transdisciplinarity, Concepts, and ATLs. This was more of my liking. However, the audio… I dreaded it and am still relunctant to do it. Maybe after this reflection.

PYP Principles:

As being able to explore transdisciplinarity and the central themes with their concepts and related concepts, I have gathered a better approach to start motivating my teachers into embracing PYP.

Let’s practice!

Making a central idea, revising and working collaboratively to reach consensus has been wonderful. I figure I can give it a shot with my teachers in one of my area meetings. Not online. The goal, help them revise central ideas and generate their owns.

Agency:

I can see a connection to Agency through the ATLs. I like emphasis on communication and collaborative skills. I would algo love to see the work with self-management and how the three aspects of Agency come into play. I really want to see it.

PYP framework:

Working the themes, the concepts, the subject-specific scopes and sequences has definetely been fun. The clear connection to MYP has been perfect. I feel that transdisciplinary is not as daunting as is being applied in my school right now. This gives me an opportunity to encourage my teachers to fall in love with PYP.

Transdisciplinarity – My context:

As of right now, I am not applying my learning about it. This will come once I finish and start helping my teachers understand and practice PYP.

Concepts – Connections:

Conceptual understanding allows kids to decode the real world. To develop their Thinking Skills. To form life-long learners. I always consider that analyzing the big ideas help kids learn in a richer way. I use concepts as a means to explore a topic and reflect about it.

ATLs:

When preparing classes, it is crucial to choose the implicit and explicit ATLs that will be worked throughout the unit. Allowing them to collaborate, analyze, regulate themselves helps them to become independent learners and being aware of their actions and their consequences.

Thoughts on Session 1

I decided to take this workshop, after having finished two the previous month (one from MYP and the other from DP) I felt it would help me understand PYP and connect what is done as continuum. Needless to say, it has been an enriching experience.

PYP Principles:

To be able to analyze International-Mindedness with its three components from the PYP perspective felt natural. As it was embedding the IB attributes.

Let’s practice!

I feel that I can help my teachers revise and understand what PYP stands for and what its aim is. In my teaching I would not apply it as I am an English B HL DP teacher. Yet, the core component cross programs are just naturally applied: such as concepts, contexts, ATLs, learning experiences, and the Inquiry Cycle.

Agency:

To be honest, I am still waiting for agency to show up in the workshop. A month ago, I started reading «Agency Learners in Change». In this book I have found out about what Agency means and its three aspects: Voice, Choice, and Ownership. As an IB educator, I know that Agency has always been a high aspiration for the IB as a core component of forming independent and life-long learners. It is clearly a goal that as Personal Project Coordinator and Supervisor I have aimed help my kids develop. The same way for my Extended Essays in Diploma.

I am wondering if perhaps the concept of «Agency» is being misunderstood by me. Perhaps it is the Agency from the IB educator? Perhaps it is aimed towards the implementation? This topic is still unclear to me.

International-Mindedness:

As an IB educator I develop IM in my students by providing authentic resources to be analyzed. Intertwining components like connections to TOK has helped my kids continue question and wonder about other people’s perspectives.

Language Role in IM:

As Language Acquisition and English B teacher I can say that language plays a key role in being able to decode the real world and develop one’s identity.

IB Attributes in Action!

Building relationship with kids and identifying which areas are meant for growth has helped me determine the attributes to be worked on and planned during teaching. Being able to reflect with them of good practices, opportunities of improvement, attributes we lack of and their reasons has also helped me grow as an educator and a life-long learner.

Local and Global Issues and its challenges:

Allowing learning experiences where students are able to explore other cultures and compare/contrast them with their own. Reflection questions that point to help others. In MYP working on Action and Service as well as Community Project Coordinator and Supervisor has been enriching. Helping kids to leave aside their egos and explore what happens around. Being able to encourage them to understand the meaning of the word community and motivating them to become positive change actors. It definitely helps them to engage with local and global issues.

The challenges?… Working with parents and accept that from their background, they are and think in a way but we can still shape these minds.

In conclusion, a nice walk through the first session.

Feelings

I do not know if my little kids will read this. Today, I just feel like writing about them…

In the middle of a class, while giving orders to my new kids I felt eyes on me from outside. To my huge surprise, a group of my 7th. «A» kids were there. As usual, Danna opened the door and interrupted the class just to give me a big hug, and outside, there they were, Ivanna, Daniel, Melissa, Ana Cristina, Aireen, Nathaly, Luis, all of them waiting for me.

These are moments that make me think, I did something good with them. I just hope to get to see them again in class next year.

What I see in my students (6th. Basic A)

Yesterday, while we were discussing the importance of effort and perseverance in class, my students asked me to detail what I see in each one of them. I couldn’t do it right away so they required that today I should bring my «report».

I shall begin in alphabetical order, I hope I can express myself well-enough for my little ones «enanos» can see themselves like I see them: brilliant, creative, naive, happy.

David: He is a little boy with bright eyes and a big heart, he is always interested in asking how I am doing and how my days are going, he is a true gentleman, asks for permission for everything. Sometimes he gets lost in the topics and usually he asks about where he must suppose to be. He is kind and generous. I often see him as an humanitarian person, fighthing for people’s rights and defending honorable causes.

Melissa: The lover of books, she is a smart and funny girl who craves for knowledge and interesting stories, this is probably why she is always seen with a book. She gets easily distracted but she manages to pay attention to the important details of the class. She makes funny noises and is a very caring lady. When I think of her in the future, I picture her as a novelist, writing in a small office fulled of books drinking some cocoa.

María Cecilia: What an amazing lady she is! She loves English and is always paying attention while contributing to the class. She is a generous and patient person. She is actually shy but she can express her points of view perfectly. I see her like a teacher, explaining things to kids and helping them grow. She always takes good care of Jorge.

Alejandro: Even though he is new in class, he is a very tenacious boy. He cannot stop talking and is often seen doing more than one thing at once. He speaks English very well but gets distracted in class. I do not know why he is always writing with red pen, it intrigues me very much. I see him as a musician somehow.

Jorge: He is a true gentleman. He loves and desires peace inside the classroom and in everything that he does. He is polite and spends his days quietly. I think he is always appreciating the beauty of things. It has been an honor to be her teacher, he has taught me compassion and patience. When I think of him as an adult, I imagine him as a doctor or a poet describing the most beautiful things on Earth or taking care with such sensitivity of ill people.

Nathaly: My little one with sore throat, She has sparkly eyes and is filled with energy. Nathaly is often paying attention but is very easy to wander away. She is polite, kind, and sweet. She puts effort in everything she does. Since she loves dancing and for her is so natural to express herself, I see her as a professional dancer when she grows up.

Gabriel: The boy with baby voice. Even though that can be annoying sometimes, he is a caring person with good intentions. He spends his days alternating between «I don’t know English» and «I know English». He admires Messi and for what I have been told his name in Facebook is related to Messi. He loves soccer and I am pretty sure that he would like Language Arts to be taught in a field of soccer. I see him as a professional soccer player.

Luisana: She is somehow mature for her age and at the same time she is not. She takes great responsiblity in her assignments and tries to be responsible enough. She fights with English but she can express her thoughts and feelings in a simple way. I sometimes see her like a business woman in her future, running her own company and conquering the world.

Guido: He is probably an artist, he is usually lost or not interested in the topics we are discussing. He is very difficult to read but he is funny and creative. Like every artist he wanders away and is hard for him to stay in reality. I see him like a performer when he grows up.

Helio: The romantic. He is such a caring person, very sweet and gentle. He likes to write poems and amorfinos. He speaks English very well, I know for a fact that his mother and his father are always supervising and helping him to be the best. He knows that sometimes we cannot win everything but the important thing is to try. I see him as a lawyer when he grows up, he is always providing reasons to his statements and opinions. He displays such a natural pose when speaking and can persuade people with his words.

Kristel: She is an active and creative lady. She is often called out for wandering around and seen doing different things in class but she works and tries to do her best. Most of the times, she cannot express herself when people are looking at her, she is shy but has great ideas. I see her like a sportswoman somehow or maybe a dancer.

Ivanna: The leader. Ivanna speaks very well English, she has a strong character and is very polite. She likes to know the reason of everything. She is always suggesting new things to do in class. She is also another one of my kids that is hard to read. She can be very persuasive and always gets her way. This is probably why I see her leading the country.

Benjamín: Such a sweet and happy boy. He fights with English even though he has studied in different places the language. He is quick at writing but sometimes he is lazy. He likes to chat with Helio and Carlita, getting lost in kids games. He is not aware of how appreciated his opinion is and this is probably why he does not study for my subject. He is one of those kids that can have any kind of career and I am pretty sure is going to be ok.

Ana Cristina: My crazy lady. The interest that she invests in class is amazing, sometimes she gets distracted but she works perfectly. I have been told that she doesn’t like to study at home because she pays attention to class and ocassionally that does not work. She is always like in a hurry, going fast and answering quickly, maybe because she is a great swimmer. Those sparkly eyes have a great future as a professional swimmer.

José Andrés: The boy with a big smile. This is the little one that is always smiling and transmits that, happiness. He is a very restless boy, always talking and playing with Danna. He is very good at English and writes funny and interesting stories. I see him like an architect, being creative and innovating things.

Daniel: The doctor-type boy. He is a very smart gentleman also very active. He analyzes things and is always looking for the logic in everything. He likes to have fun and perform in front of the school. He is not shy at all, he likes to express himself to the fullest. When he explains something he does it with this delicate touch for everybody to understand what he is saying. That is why I see him as a doctor in the future. Researching and analyzing things.

José Xavier: Joe is a writer at heart. He is very creative and usually invents new words. He always makes me smiles, it is like nothing disturbs him and that everything will be alright. He wanders around and needs to be point out that he is not paying attention but he is very good at English. I see him like a rocket scientist because he always talks to me about his sister and the experiments that she carries at her university.

Danna: It is amazing how different a year can be. My little one who always struggled with me in 5th. Basic C is now my most incredible student. She is very intelligent and is quick at reading the situation. She has a vivid imagination and a very generous heart. She is always demonstrating her best side and is one of the most well-educated students that I have. She always greets me with a «Good morning» and says goodbye with «Enjoy your meal and your afternoon». Those are my most precious moments in the day. I see her as a fashion designer leading the runways of Paris.

Jonathan: He is a very sensitive kid, always being funny and following the crazy ideas of Ricardo, Guido, and Luis. English is not his best subject. I believe he likes it but is a little bit hard for him, either way, he always tries hard to do his best. He gets really happy when he does something correctly and I like that expression in his face very much. He is very quiet, at least with me, so I see him as an engineer as a grown up.

Carlita: She is extremely sweet and sensitive. She cares a lot for her classmates and has awesome ideas. She is also a mesmerizing artist, her drawings are flawless, perfect. She demonstrates in the things that she does how much she cares. She surprises me of how well she can express herself, in English and in Spanish. She speaks like a well-educated grown up. She seeks for logic in things and is not afraid of showing crazy ideas. She is one of those kids that is going to change the world with her drawings.

Juan Pablo: The boy with the contagious laugh. He has a tender voice. He is very good at English and explains his reasons clearly. Sometimes he likes to come up with hypothesis which I find extremely hilarious. He always makes me smile because of the faces he makes. He is a happy kid and is always fidgeting, I think is because he gets anxious to continue with more fun activities. Just as Joe, I see him as a Rocket Scientist blowing everyone’s mind.

Roberto: Roberto loves to engage himself in the topics that we are discussing in class. He is actively participating in class and turns his assignments in a neat presentation. He is very curious about things and his eyes are very bright. So often I have to call out for his attention because he is talking with Juan Pablo but he is a good kid. I wish I could see him with a career as a grown up but he has shifted from every scenario I have imagined.

Carlitos: The D. A. He’s the sweetest, most creative, and the most restless boy I have ever met. He has those sparkly eyes that are always on the move, analyzing everything and making fun comments about anything. At the beginning of last year, we had difficulty in establishing the relationship teacher-student but this year he has proved that every little incentive that you give to each kid is worth. I have seen him blossom into a wonderful young gentleman. He participates in class and gives his points of view in Spanish. He is beginning to speak a little bit in English and that makes me extremely happy. I always see him as a Young Thomas Edison. He is going to change the world most definitely!

Aireen: The lady with the crazy stories. Aireen has a lovely attitude every day that I see. She has never been angry or bored. She talks with Ivanna, Briana, and Ana Paula, well, most of these kids talk a lot. She is not afraid of making mistakes and she tries to do things better. She has a big smile and is extremely energetic. I see her like running concerts and events, making people’s faces go «WOOOOWWWWW»

Paúl: The never stopping smiling kid. He is always smiling, He walks slowly and he is always questioning something new. I haven’t seen him playing ping pong but I have played with him using a soccer ball for ping pong. He is really good! He is really shy, he tries to give his opinions but when people are watching him he forgets what he wants to say. I usually see him as a philosopher with a secret life.

Romina: The tender lady. She is really sweet and extremely polite. She remains quiet during the class but when she speaks she amazes me every single time. She has a voice like a reporter and she is always keen to smile for a picture. She has delicate features like a ballerina. She is also as a wonderful artist like Carlita. I always enjoy seeing her drawings. I imagine her being a reporter in the morning and a ballerina in the nights while painting in her own studio in her free time.

Nashly: She likes to be participate in class. She loves to be explained with detail what she has to do. She is really responsible and polite. Nashly has this really lovely curly hair and moves herself with confidence. So many times she has stated that she does not like Carlitos but she cannot help to burst into laughter whenever she sees him doing something funny. She has shown to be patient and tends to help her classmates often. I see her as a doctor when she becomes an adult because she analyzes everything and does things with attention and care.

Luis: He is a very active boy who loves to express himself. He is stubborn but sweet. Luchito is really thin and walks like «a boss», he does not like to be told that he needs to let others participate! He has a tendency of writing in only one side of the paper, as a result, he has had 3 Language Arts notebooks. He loves his big and numerous family and wishes that the tradition keeps on. He is already a young uncle! Even though he has a sweet voice he is really serious about the things that he says. I see him as a celebrity.

Ricardo: The Spanglish speaker. He is as inventive and creative as Carlitos. He is a gentleman and enjoys proposing new activities. He speaks English but nowadays he speaks Spanglish. He is crazy and I care about him very much. So many times he has made laugh so hard of his witticism, doing something completely out of the blue. He speaks unhurried and with a comic tone. I have enjoyed reading his writings very much. I see him like a poet reciting his deepest thoughts and selling his inventions in his spare moments.

Brianna: She is the cutest little girl on the universe. She has a big heart and good intentions. She enjoys dancing and she does it so well! By being honest, she proves to be generous, kind, respectful. She enjoys giving me letters that I will cherish forever. Even though English is not her best subject she puts an incredible effort into every class. Yes, sometimes she gets lost but she tries so hard. I love to see that in every kid, TRY. Always keen to help anyone she can, I am pretty sure she will become a professional dancer doing humanitarian activities for sure.

Ana Paula: The kind and wise. Ana Paula is a tall thin lady with very long dark hair. She is really curious about everything and is also very responsible. For what I have heard she helps her mom and dad in everything she can. My days are enlightened with our talks. She has a sore voice and does this gesture with her finger pushing her glasses up. She analyzes everything and that’s why she has decided to become a nutritionist when she grows up. She’s going to get very far in her life for sure.

Those are my opinions, I wish I could write more about my little ones. They have made teaching interesting. Sometimes is hard, sometimes is not. Either way, I love them all very much.
